Virginia Bred Program
of the Virginia Horse Industry Board

The Virginia Horse Industry Board’s (VHIB) mission is the promotion and economic development of the Virginia equine industry. To that end, and in an effort to recognize quality horse breeding (i.e., horses foaled in the Commonwealth), the Virginia Horse Industry Board has instituted a "Virginia Bred" Program.

in the state.

Virginia Bred Program Details

This program operates similarly to the VHIB Grants Program; however, its requirements for submission and timeframes are completely distinct. Monies are awarded to the breed associations who, according to their own rules and programs, determine the awarding of "Virginia Bred" monies directly to breeders or owners.

The program operates on an annual basis - a year in advance. In July, Virginia breed associations are advised that "Letters of Intent" for the "Virginia Bred" Program for the next year are to be submitted. A committee of the VHIB then reviews the letters and determines which associations are invited to submit full applications for their "Virginia Bred" Program for the following year. These are due by mid-November. The VHIB then reviews the applications and determines which associations have best met the program requirements and the dollar amount each will receive for their programs.

Monies are then awarded to the associations before their "Virginia Bred" Programs take place for that year. Associations must also fully report on each year’s program explaining how the monies were used, how successful the program was, and acknowledging the sponsorship of the VHIB in all program materials. For the Virginia breed associations who have been advised that their Letters of Intent were approved, the guidelines and application form for the 2011 "Virginia Bred" Program can be downloaded from the right-hand column.

Reporting requirements for those associations who received VHIB funding for their 2010 programs can also be downloaded.

Letters of Intent are due in the VHIB Office by July 19, 2011.

Full applications and final reports (for 2011) are due by November 18, 2011.
